As the final traces of summer’s sun cast a golden glow over Davis County, September has lots of activities to partake in. With its mild temperatures and the subtle hints of fall beginning to appear, this is the perfect time to venture out and explore.

Scarecrow Walk
Kick off fall with a fun, family-friendly stroll through the USU Botanical Center! Each year we partner with local businesses, organizations, and individuals to bring you a display of scarecrows hidden along the paths of our property. Come and see the colors change in the Varga Arboretum and celebrate the harvest season in our demonstration gardens.
This event is FREE to the public.

9/11 Day of Service
Two decades ago on September 11, 2001, many lost their lives to the 9/11 attacks. To honor the spirit of sacrifice made that day and the sacrifices that continue to be made by members of the armed forces and their families, we honor those heroes by uniting in service and volunteerism throughout our communities.

Red Barn Fall Harvest, Graduation and Car Show
Red Barn Academy is hosting our 3rd annual Fall Harvest Car Show/Graduation on September 9th, 2023. Our Fall Harvest is our 2nd big event of the year. This event is not only to raise funds for our program, but also to highlight our graduates. Please check out this link for information and registration, as well as our 2023 Fall Harvest flier included in this email.
There will be a graduation ceremony and a car show. The car show will be hosted by Rockin’ Hotrod Productions. There will be a huge turnout of classic cars. Performance Auto in Bountiful is our title sponsor. They will be giving away the ’84 Ford Bronco that they have restored. View the Bronco here. There will be food trucks and a burnout competition. This event is free to attend and will be family-friendly.
Our sponsorships include various marketing opportunities. Some have premiere parking/VIP parking spaces. All funds raised go directly into our program to provide sober-safe living and educational opportunities for our 50+ students.

UMFA in the Wild | Make a Nature Rubbing Book
Join the UMFA in Utah’s amazing wilderness to experience nature and make art. Learn about the variety of textures in nature and how artists represent them in paintings and drawings. Construct your own book to classify and record rubbings of the natural textures around you.

OAS Star Party

Basin and Range at Antelope Island
Come learn about Basin and Range geography, and how Antelope Island fits into Utah’s Basin and Range! We’ll do some basin and range movement activities (optional, low physical exertion), and draw a basin and range system to solve a fault-line mystery! This activity is appropriate for kids ages 6 and up.
We’ll meet outdoors at Buffalo Point. This activity lasts 30 minutes, with time for questions after.

Sunset Kayak Tour

Experience Great Salt Lake in a different light as the sun sets into the water horizon.
A limited number of kayaks are available to those who need them.

CenterPoint Legacy Theatre presents Jekyll & Hyde
Based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic thriller, Jekyll & Hyde is the tale of a brilliant mind gone terribly awry. Set to the beautifully written music of Frank Wildhorn, this is a powerful story of the talented physician Dr. Jekyll’s attempt to cure his ailing father’s mental illness by separating “good” from “evil” in the human personality. Experimenting on himself, he inadvertently creates an alternative persona of pure evil, dubbed Mr. Hyde, who wreaks murderous havoc on the city of London. As his fiancée, Emma grows fearful of the changes she sees in her beloved, a prostitute named Lucy finds herself dangerously drawn to the doctor and his alter ego. Struggling to control the monster within, Jekyll must race to find a cure before the demon of his own creation completely consumes him.

On Pitch Performing Arts presents The Doll’s House
Nora Helmer once secretly borrowed a large sum of money so that her husband could recuperate from a serious illness. She never told him of this loan and has been secretly paying it back in small installments by saving from her household allowance. Her husband, Torvald, thinks her careless and childlike, and often calls her his doll. When he is appointed bank director, his first act is to relieve a man who was once disgraced for having forged his signature on a document. This man, Nils Krogstad, is the person from whom Nora has borrowed her money. It is then revealed that she forged her father’s signature in order to get the money. Krogstad threatens to reveal Nora’s crime and thus disgrace her and her husband unless Nora can convince her husband not to fire him. Nora tries to influence her husband, but he thinks of Nora as a simple child who cannot understand the value of money or business. Thus, when Torvald discovers that Nora has forged her father’s name, he is ready to disclaim his wife even though she had done it for him. Later when all is solved, Nora sees that her husband is not worth her love and she leaves him.

On Pitch Performing Arts presents Daddy Long Legs
Jerusha Abbott is the “Oldest Orphan in the John Grier Home” until a mysterious benefactor decides to send her to college to be educated as a writer. Required to write him a letter once a month, she is never to know the benefactor’s identity – so she invents one for him: Daddy Long Legs. Although she knows that he will never respond to her letter, she grows more and more fond of this elusive and kindly “old” gentleman. But another relationship soon begins to develop in Jerusha’s life. Jervis Pendleton is the well-to-do, “youngish” uncle of one of Jerusha’s roommates, who introduces her to a world of literature, travel and adventure. Through her correspondence with Daddy Long Legs and her growing intimacy with Jervis, Jerusha’s letters chronicle her emergence as a delightfully independent “New American Woman.” Yet, there is one startling fact that Jerusha has yet to uncover – a fact that will change her life forever.

Hopebox Theatre presents The Little Mermaid
Beautiful mermaid Ariel should be a happy girl — she lives in an enchanted undersea country, her father is a King, and she has the most beautiful singing voice. But she is a passionate, headstrong teenager, and wants what she cannot have — to live on land. When she falls in love with a handsome human prince, Ariel is more determined than ever to gain a pair of legs. But her only option is to defy her furious father, and bargain with Ursula the Sea Witch, giving her voice as the price of entry onto dry land. With the help of Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull, and officious court composer Sebastian the crab, Ariel must wordlessly gain Prince Eric’s love within three days — or lose her soul to the ambitious witch! Based on the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, and the wildly popular Disney film, this musical staging of The Little Mermaid features a funny and fanciful book by Doug Wright, with the beloved score by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman, and Glenn Slater in an expanded but completely faithful form, featuring the rambunctious and persuasive “Under the Sea,” the romantic expectation of “Kiss the Girl,” and that anthem to longing and belonging, “Part of Your World.”

Did you Know?
Hopebox Theatre creates shows to raise money to help people with cancer who live in the community. At the last show, they take a portion of ticket/concession sales plus what they have raised and give that person a check. Their name goes on a plaque and is put on the lobby wall.
The Improv-ables
The Improvables perform live, family-friendly improv. Each show is custom-tailored to the audience that night, so you never know what to expect, and neither do they! That’s the fun of improv – they take your suggestions and the things you love to create an unforgettable, never-before-seen, one-of-a-kind comedy experience. Shows last 90 minutes and tickets are required.

9th Annual Plein Air Competition
We are pleased to announce our 9th Annual Plein Air Competition. This year’s theme, Golden Hour, asks artists to capture the evocative time that lives in between day’s end and night’s beginning. This prompt isn’t just about the typical artifice of sunset, but what nature gives us in its most fleeting moments amidst a chaotic and ever-changing world.
Artists are invited to submit work in any medium (painting, sculpture, installation, fiber) as long as the piece meets the requirements listed in the slides below. A Guest Juror will select three works to receive cash awards which will be announced at the opening reception.

Snow Horse Art Gallery
Shrapnel Lounge: Over the past decade, I have been exploring and developing this language in which I paint, becoming inspired by the land we live on and how we interact with it. Throughout my exploration, I have been intrigued by the technical drawing we use to study the world around us. I use topography and mapping as an integral source of inspiration. My style is rooted in a core desire to let go of control and allow myself to be informed by the canvas in front of me.
It starts with a single line referencing our geography or imagining each line guiding the next. My flow as an artist is to understand when to stop, giving me the freedom to paint with my hands rather than my head.
When surrendering to this process, I get the unique opportunity to see my experiences and subconscious unfold before me in color, line, and shape. My artwork is a juxtaposition of the pathways beneath our feet and the pathways in our minds.

Farmington City Patriot Day 5k
The Farmington City Patriot Day 5k (held on Saturday September 9th) is part of the city-wide 9/11 day of Service and Remembrance. We hope that you will kick off the day with us and then find ways to serve in our community by visiting JustServe.org

Wasatch 100
The Wasatch Front 100 Mile Endurance Run is held in Utah the first Friday and Saturday after Labor Day each year. The run stretches from East Mountain Wilderness Park, Utah to Soldier Hollow, Utah and covers some of the most beautiful scenery the Wasatch Mountains have to offer. There is a cumulative gain of approximately 24,000 feet, as well as a cumulative loss of approximately 23,300 feet throughout the course. This is a premier run that will test the endurance of any runner.

Labor Day Triathlon
This course offers a sprint triathlon distance as well as a novice distance. Our triathlon is in TRUE triathlon order: swim, bike, run.

Brineman Triathlon
The Brineman Triathlon is an annual triathlon event that starts at Still Water Lakes Resort in Syracuse. Still Water is private property, do not try and attempt to swim in the lake prior to race day. The Sprint course consists of a single 750m loop, while the Olympic course consists of a single 0.9-mile loop. The long course swim is a 1.2-mile swim consisting of a small 0.2-mile loop, followed by a full 1-mile loop around the perimeter of the lake. Still Water is 8′ deep and about 60′ wide. In the event that you need to get out, it’s easy to get to the side of this lake. Water safety patrol on kayaks and SUPs will be monitoring the water portion of the event. The bike course is still being determined. You will finish at the Jensen Nature Park in Syracuse.

Bountiful Town Square
Whether you’re experiencing Dave in the winter or the warmer months, Bountiful’s Town Square has the Bountiful Ice Ribbon in the winter which then becomes a path for roller skating and blading, walking and strollers in the spring. Reservations will not be required, but check with the South Davis Rec Center for opening dates after the ice rink closes for the season. Lagoon Amusement Park
Lagoon Amusement Park is Utah’s only amusement park. Depending on when you are visiting, Lagoon has a generous operating season from late March through Halloween in October. Visit and discover the magic that awaits you in Lagoon, Lagoon-A-Beach, and Pioneer Village.
