Get Holiday Cheer from Elf, The Musical at CenterPoint Legacy Theatre

by Discover Davis

The story of Elf is being told at CenterPoint Legacy Theatre, with jolly music and fun characters that will bring you holiday cheer, till December 22nd.

Review

As a big fan of the movie Elf, I had high expectations for this production. Ben Heder (Buddy, TTHS) does a great job of encompassing the energy and silliness seen in the movie. He looks at life with sugar-coated glasses, inspiring us all to see the good more.

CenterPoint definitely put their own spin on the Elf story. Though there were many of the classic lines from the movie, I was happily surprised with some storyline variations and unexpected comedic moments. And as a lover of music, I was also very pleased with much more singing and dancing than the movie has.

Some of my favorite characters were the North Pole elves. They had such fun costumes and personalities, it was a joy to watch them dance and sing with Buddy. Santa’s magical toy workshop made me feel like a kid again. Costume Designer Rachel Lindsay did an incredible job on their colorful, imaginative costumes.

Family Values

This story is a great reminder of what matters most in life – family – making it a great production to see with your loved ones.

Buddy travels across the ‘seven levels of the Candy Cane Forest and through the sea of swirly, twirly gumdrops’ to meet his grumpy father, Walter Hobbs, played by Andrew Gemperline TTHS. With the help of his unconditionally loving step-family, Buddy finds a way to his father’s heart. First Buddy embarrasses Walter at work though and surprises him with his cheery outlook.

Love is in the Air

As Buddy searches for his dad you see him unexpectedly fall in love. Jovie, played by Niki Waite TTHS, embraces pessimism until Buddy lightens her life. This charming love story is a reminder to be silly with each other and that it’s okay to believe in magic as an adult.
