SUMMARY:Surface and Sacrifice: Pablo Cruz-Ayala
DESCRIPTION:Surface and Sacrifice: Pablo Cruz-Ayala\nExhibition Run Dates: 02.26 – 03.26\n\nSurface and Sacrifice examines the emotional\, physical\, and generational weight carried by immigrant and undocumented families whose labor sustains the landscapes of Utah. Growing up in a mixed-status household\, I witnessed my parents build homes they could never own\, shape neighborhoods that would never credit them\, and work through exhaustion\, illness\, and uncertainty in pursuit of stability for their children. These memories root my practice and guide my material choices.\n\nWorking with concrete\, sand\, copper\, ancient earth pigments\, and acrylic\, I treat each artwork as a site where material history and family memory converge. These substances\, which I’ve seen associated with construction\, labor\, and resilience\, transform into metaphors for the unseen sacrifices that underlie immigrant survival. Their weight\, grit\, and fracture embody both burden and endurance.\n\nIn Surface and Sacrifice\, I integrate traditional Mexican techniques\, including papel picado patterns\, embroidery-inspired linework\, and altar-making sensibilities. These motifs weave through layers of industrial material\, suggesting the cultural inheritances carried across borders and preserved despite displacement. The surfaces evoke construction zones\, protest banners\, and devotional spaces\, sites of both struggle and reverence.\n\nThis exhibition is not solely autobiographical; it is communal in nature. It asks viewers to consider the invisible infrastructures of labor that uphold our cities and households. By foregrounding the textures of work and the echoes of migration\, these pieces honor undocumented families whose stories are often obscured beneath the very structures they help build. Through abstraction\, I invite audiences to feel\, rather than simply observe\, the weight and resilience of these lived experiences.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:STRINGS: A CHANCE TO SAY GOODBYE: XI ZHANG
DESCRIPTION:In my series Strings\, I explore the final stages of my grandmother’s life through theatrical scenes and emotionally charged imagery. Having been raised by her\, I witnessed her quiet\, unconditional love—an everyday grace that later became shadowed by memory loss and disorientation.\n\nAs her recognition of me faded\, I became a stranger to someone I had once called home. In response\, I turned to painting as a means of imagining her inner monologue—one that could no longer be spoken aloud. These works attempt to breach the transparent walls that formed between us\, translating silence into color\, gesture\, and space.\n\nMy broader practice centers on how consciousness and emotion alter our perception of reality. Drawing from contemporary psychological theory\, I depict fictionalized environments where internal states manifest as physical landscapes—confusing the line between the subjective and the objective. Using a blend of expressionist and abstract aesthetics\, I construct visual spaces that reflect the internal logic of my subjects’ minds: their fears\, memories\, and longings.\n\nAcross these works\, melancholia often surfaces as both subject and atmosphere. Figures drift through dreamlike terrains—part psychological\, part mythic—where personal turmoil merges with universal uncertainty. My painterly language draws from both Chinese ink traditions and Western abstraction\, layering translucent washes and visceral mark-making to capture the complexity of emotional experience. In Strings and beyond\, painting becomes a place where remembrance\, empathy\, and psychological inquiry meet.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:HERMES\, ICARUS AND THE FATES: ALLYSON GLENN
DESCRIPTION:For the ancients\, stories transformed perception and helped make sense of the inexplicable – natural phenomena\, mysteries\, the life cycle. Since people took their stories and icons with them\, myths inevitably changed when communities transcended borders.\n\nFascinated by this topic\, my artwork explores myths’ influence on the fictional worlds we construct and the real ones we experience. This research has led me to several countries where I have photographed antiquity sculptures\, ancient ruins\, museum collections\, botanical gardens\, and ornament stores. On occasion\, dreams have inspired me to seek out a place\, or an object.\n\nI make artworks in painting\, drawing\, animation\, and printmaking. Experimenting between mediums has led to abstraction (having typically worked figuratively until recently)\, and a desire to capture a sensation of time within two-dimensional works.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:CONNECT: INEZ GARCIA
DESCRIPTION:Connect describes physical interaction as both intimate and invasive\, a form of both connection and microaggressions that bodies of color often experience. The work grapples with how racialized bodies are simultaneously othered and fetishized\, with personal boundaries frequently disregarded.\n\nThe cast hands evoke a sense of absence\, ghostliness\, or even an idealized neutrality\, which contrasts powerfully with the reality of touch as both connection and intrusion. The adornments nod to commodification\, or even the illusion of value— alluding to how bodies of color are often objectified or exoticized.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:Who Sustains Our Tables? by Sara Serratos
DESCRIPTION:The solo exhibition project “Who Sustains Our Tables?” compiles a body of work consisting of twelve artworks in various media such as sculpture\, installation\, action\, video performance\, photography\, and film. The exhibition’s concept is to honor the labor of people who work the land in the Americas and nurture communities across the globe. This exhibition explores history from a decolonial perspective\, questions the exoticization and otherness of BIPOC communities\, and advocates for memory consciousness\, decolonization of history\, and a return to the roots of pre-Colombian times—the\npower of memory.\n\nThis solo exhibition project is composed of three sections: Nourishment\, Spirituality and Religious Figures\, and Labor and Product.\n\nARTIST STATEMENT\nIn my artwork\, I am interested in vegetables and fruits as products\, sources of nourishment\, and religious symbols. I portray their mass production\, importation\, and exportation. To serve their function as products\, akin to identification cards\, produce has been cataloged and categorized with barcodes displaying their data: their value\, country of origin\, and names on stickers affixed in supermarkets. Through this exchange of produce for currency\, I aim to highlight the laborers who have cultivated the land. From the colonization of the Americas by Europeans to present-day exploitation by government entities and private corporations\, the individuals working the land primarily come from indigenous\, Afro-descendant\, and mestizo origins. Once forced to work the land without freedom\, they/we now face a new form of enslavement. Can it truly be called freedom to work without receiving a livable wage? Produce is essential for our sustenance\, diet\, and existence.\n\nWhether purchased from supermarkets\, markets\, or even street vendors\, we bring these items into our homes weekly. Produce forms an integral part of our households\, recipes\, histories\, ancestries\, memories\, and families. Thriving in fertile land with appropriate humidity and sunlight\, produce in the Americas originates from plantations spanning from Canada to Chile. Residing in Utah\, within the desert’s harsh climate\, I am nostalgic for the origins of these fruits and vegetables\, which hail from my homeland\, Mexico. My personal relationship with them is intimate; I view each fruit and vegetable body as possessing unique\, irregular shapes and sizes\, embodying perfect imperfection. Their varied textures\, colors\, and flavors evoke spirituality and holiness for me. Seeking to eschew exoticism—the othering gaze—and embrace the ritual of the living routine\, including eating\, I have chosen to focus on produce that holds religious significance in pre-Columbian cultures\, such as corn in Maya culture\, as detailed in the sacred text\, the Popol Vuh.\n\nSecondly\, those which are part of our Mexican identity\, such as nopales (cactus leaves)\, depicted on the Mexican flag and integral to the legend of Tenochtitlan’s formation (now Mexico City). Thirdly\, those that form part of our Mexican daily diet\, including avocado\, tomatillo\, poblano pepper\, lime\, bananas\, and chayote squash. Lastly\, certain produce bodies themselves possess symbolic power\, akin to weapons\, such as chayote squash\, pineapple\, dragon fruit\, and serrano pepper. Sun\, soil\, seeds\, water\, wind\, light\, night\, leaves\, flowers\, bees\, insects\, pollination\, fruits\, vegetables\, land\, agriculture\, hands\, labor\, planting\, people working the land\, history\, plantations\, enslavement\, roots\, inequity\, injustice\, low wages—all these elements intertwine within my artistic exploration.
