SUMMARY:Matilda
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl\, the Tony Award-winning Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical is the captivating masterpiece from the Royal Shakespeare Company that revels in the anarchy of childhood\, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life. With book by Dennis Kelly and original songs by Tim Minchin\, Matilda has won 47 international awards and continues to thrill sold-out audiences of all ages around the world.\n\nMatilda is a little girl with astonishing wit\, intelligence and psychokinetic powers. She’s unloved by her cruel parents but impresses her schoolteacher Miss Honey. During her first term at school\, the two forge a bond as Miss Honey begins to recognize and appreciate Matilda’s extraordinary personality. Matilda’s school life isn’t completely smooth sailing\, however – the school’s mean headmistress\, Miss Trunchbull\, hates children and just loves to punish those who don’t abide by her rules. But Matilda has courage and cleverness in equal amounts\, and could be the school pupils’ saving grace!\n\nPacked with high-energy dance numbers\, catchy songs and an unforgettable star turn for a young actress\, Matilda is a joyous girl power romp. Children and adults alike will be thrilled and delighted by the story of the special little girl with an extraordinary imagination.

SUMMARY:WOMEN OF ART\, BUTTON BY BUTTON: ROBERT FUERER
DESCRIPTION:Women of Art: Button by Button is a fusion of art\, fashion\, and memory expressed through a series of button paintings that reinterpret the most iconic females in art.\n\nCreated in 2024\, these works transform buttons into abstract mosaics of familiar figures\, inviting viewers to engage actively with the art and complete the images in their minds.\n\nEach button carries its history\, sourced from antique shops\, family collections\, and personal clothing. By repurposing these materials\, I aim to blur the lines between art and craft\, breathing new life into objects once integral to our daily lives. The result is a dynamic\, tactile experience that shifts with the viewer’s perspective\, making the familiar feel new again.\n\nThe paintings in this exhibition are not just reproductions of famous images; they are abstractions that challenge the viewer to engage actively with the work. The layering of buttons\, sometimes four or five layers deep\, and the careful selection of colors\, finishes\, and textures\, create a dynamic surface that shifts with the viewer’s perspective. Transparent buttons mimic the subtlety of light and shadow\, while metallic finishes capture the brilliance of color\, all contributing to a fresh interpretation of the original works.\n\nBy choosing to work with images like the Mona Lisa or Venus\, I’m tapping into the collective memory of the viewer. The abstract nature of the button mosaics requires the viewer to “complete” the image in their mind\, making their engagement with the art more interactive and personal. This element of participation is central to the show—it is not just about seeing a familiar image; it’s about rediscovering it in a new and unexpected form.\n\nThe journey of this technique began in 2008 when I created my first button painting titled “Mosaic Mona” using a box of my grandmother’s buttons found in my parents’ basement. That moment of discovery and creation has since evolved into a practice of finding perfect buttons\, each one contributing to the narrative of these iconic works. Material Girls is a celebration of this journey\, of the transformation of the mundane into the extraordinary\, and of the enduring power of these icons to resonate with us in new ways.\n\nWomen of Art: Button by Button is an exhibition that blurs the lines between art and craft\, memory and innovation\, the familiar and the abstract. Through these button paintings\, I aim to create a dialogue between the viewer and the art\, where each piece is not just seen but experienced\, completed\, and reimagined in the mind of the beholder. It is a testament to the power of materials\, and to the enduring legacy of the icons that continue to inspire us.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:STRINGS: A CHANCE TO SAY GOODBYE: XI ZHANG
DESCRIPTION:In my series Strings\, I explore the final stages of my grandmother’s life through theatrical scenes and emotionally charged imagery. Having been raised by her\, I witnessed her quiet\, unconditional love—an everyday grace that later became shadowed by memory loss and disorientation.\n\nAs her recognition of me faded\, I became a stranger to someone I had once called home. In response\, I turned to painting as a means of imagining her inner monologue—one that could no longer be spoken aloud. These works attempt to breach the transparent walls that formed between us\, translating silence into color\, gesture\, and space.\n\nMy broader practice centers on how consciousness and emotion alter our perception of reality. Drawing from contemporary psychological theory\, I depict fictionalized environments where internal states manifest as physical landscapes—confusing the line between the subjective and the objective. Using a blend of expressionist and abstract aesthetics\, I construct visual spaces that reflect the internal logic of my subjects’ minds: their fears\, memories\, and longings.\n\nAcross these works\, melancholia often surfaces as both subject and atmosphere. Figures drift through dreamlike terrains—part psychological\, part mythic—where personal turmoil merges with universal uncertainty. My painterly language draws from both Chinese ink traditions and Western abstraction\, layering translucent washes and visceral mark-making to capture the complexity of emotional experience. In Strings and beyond\, painting becomes a place where remembrance\, empathy\, and psychological inquiry meet.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:HERMES\, ICARUS AND THE FATES: ALLYSON GLENN
DESCRIPTION:For the ancients\, stories transformed perception and helped make sense of the inexplicable – natural phenomena\, mysteries\, the life cycle. Since people took their stories and icons with them\, myths inevitably changed when communities transcended borders.\n\nFascinated by this topic\, my artwork explores myths’ influence on the fictional worlds we construct and the real ones we experience. This research has led me to several countries where I have photographed antiquity sculptures\, ancient ruins\, museum collections\, botanical gardens\, and ornament stores. On occasion\, dreams have inspired me to seek out a place\, or an object.\n\nI make artworks in painting\, drawing\, animation\, and printmaking. Experimenting between mediums has led to abstraction (having typically worked figuratively until recently)\, and a desire to capture a sensation of time within two-dimensional works.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:FRAGMENTS TO WHOLENESS GROUP SHOW
DESCRIPTION:In Fragments to Wholeness\, glass-making is presented as a metaphor for transformation\, highlighting how something as fragile as glass can be molded into new forms.\n\nUnder the guidance of renowned glass artist Sarinda Jones and trauma therapists Holly Willard (LCSW-RPT-S)  and Sarah Bargar (LCSW)\, 12 adolescent survivors of sexual abuse learned the skills and science of the glass artist during a six week expressive art therapy group.  The group discussed themes such as loss\, resilience\, and the potential for transformation as they worked with glass\, creating five individual projects and one group project.\n\nRecent research has demonstrated the effectiveness of integrating expressive arts therapies with traditional trauma treatments\, offering alternative channels for expression that transcend verbal communication. Glass-making\, in particular\, offers a unique opportunity for teens to experience hands-on creativity\, which can foster self-reflection\, emotional regulation\, and the rebuilding of trust in oneself and others.\n\nThis class was designed and administered by Grandview for Good\, a nonprofit based in Bountiful that is focused on transforming lives through accessible therapy.  The class was funded through a grant from No More Victims\, a nonprofit organization focused on providing mental health services for children who have been sexually abused\, so they can go on to live happy\, fulfilled lives.\n\nFragments to Wholeness was made possible through the visionary collaboration of therapist Holly Willard\, LCSW\, RPT-S\, who designed the expressive arts curriculum and brought her deep expertise in trauma and play therapy to guide the healing process; therapist Sarah Bargar\, LCSW\, whose trauma-informed approach and commitment to mindfulness created a compassionate space for empowerment and growth; and glass artist Sarinda Jones\, whose mastery of kiln-formed glass and belief in the transformative power of art helped shape the creative journey from fragility to resilience. Together\, these women crafted a program that honors the strength of young survivors and the profound potential of art in the healing process.\n\nAll of the young artists are students and live in the Davis County community. Their identities are kept confidential.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:CONNECT: INEZ GARCIA
DESCRIPTION:Connect describes physical interaction as both intimate and invasive\, a form of both connection and microaggressions that bodies of color often experience. The work grapples with how racialized bodies are simultaneously othered and fetishized\, with personal boundaries frequently disregarded.\n\nThe cast hands evoke a sense of absence\, ghostliness\, or even an idealized neutrality\, which contrasts powerfully with the reality of touch as both connection and intrusion. The adornments nod to commodification\, or even the illusion of value— alluding to how bodies of color are often objectified or exoticized.\n\n\n\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.

SUMMARY:Something Rotten The Musical
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous\, crowd-pleasing musical farce\, Something Rotten.  Created by Grammy Award-winning songwriter Wayne Kirkpatrick\, and successful screenwriters Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell\, Something Rotten was lauded by audience members and critics alike\, receiving several Best Musical nominations and hailed by Time Out New York as “the funniest musical comedy in at least 400 years”.\n\nSet in the 1590s\, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing\, dancing and acting at the same time\, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night\, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self\, and all that jazz.\n\nSomething Rotten features large song and dance numbers\, and a wacky cast of over-the-top characters\, each with their own moment to shine. Throughout its Broadway run\, the musical received a show-stopping standing ovation from audiences… in the beginning of the first act!  It’s become clear that “nothing’s as amazing as a musical\,” so don’t miss your chance to bring this history-twisting tale to your stage.\nThis calendar listing is brought to you by NowPlayingUtah.com\, Utah’s one-stop\, online website for arts and entertainment events\, powered by the Utah Cultural Alliance.
