SUMMARY:Who Sustains Our Tables? by Sara Serratos
DESCRIPTION:The solo exhibition project “Who Sustains Our Tables?” compiles a body of work consisting of twelve artworks in various media such as sculpture\, installation\, action\, video performance\, photography\, and film. The exhibition’s concept is to honor the labor of people who work the land in the Americas and nurture communities across the globe. This exhibition explores history from a decolonial perspective\, questions the exoticization and otherness of BIPOC communities\, and advocates for memory consciousness\, decolonization of history\, and a return to the roots of pre-Colombian times—the\npower of memory.\n\nThis solo exhibition project is composed of three sections: Nourishment\, Spirituality and Religious Figures\, and Labor and Product.\n\nARTIST STATEMENT\nIn my artwork\, I am interested in vegetables and fruits as products\, sources of nourishment\, and religious symbols. I portray their mass production\, importation\, and exportation. To serve their function as products\, akin to identification cards\, produce has been cataloged and categorized with barcodes displaying their data: their value\, country of origin\, and names on stickers affixed in supermarkets. Through this exchange of produce for currency\, I aim to highlight the laborers who have cultivated the land. From the colonization of the Americas by Europeans to present-day exploitation by government entities and private corporations\, the individuals working the land primarily come from indigenous\, Afro-descendant\, and mestizo origins. Once forced to work the land without freedom\, they/we now face a new form of enslavement. Can it truly be called freedom to work without receiving a livable wage? Produce is essential for our sustenance\, diet\, and existence.\n\nWhether purchased from supermarkets\, markets\, or even street vendors\, we bring these items into our homes weekly. Produce forms an integral part of our households\, recipes\, histories\, ancestries\, memories\, and families. Thriving in fertile land with appropriate humidity and sunlight\, produce in the Americas originates from plantations spanning from Canada to Chile. Residing in Utah\, within the desert’s harsh climate\, I am nostalgic for the origins of these fruits and vegetables\, which hail from my homeland\, Mexico. My personal relationship with them is intimate; I view each fruit and vegetable body as possessing unique\, irregular shapes and sizes\, embodying perfect imperfection. Their varied textures\, colors\, and flavors evoke spirituality and holiness for me. Seeking to eschew exoticism—the othering gaze—and embrace the ritual of the living routine\, including eating\, I have chosen to focus on produce that holds religious significance in pre-Columbian cultures\, such as corn in Maya culture\, as detailed in the sacred text\, the Popol Vuh.\n\nSecondly\, those which are part of our Mexican identity\, such as nopales (cactus leaves)\, depicted on the Mexican flag and integral to the legend of Tenochtitlan’s formation (now Mexico City). Thirdly\, those that form part of our Mexican daily diet\, including avocado\, tomatillo\, poblano pepper\, lime\, bananas\, and chayote squash. Lastly\, certain produce bodies themselves possess symbolic power\, akin to weapons\, such as chayote squash\, pineapple\, dragon fruit\, and serrano pepper. Sun\, soil\, seeds\, water\, wind\, light\, night\, leaves\, flowers\, bees\, insects\, pollination\, fruits\, vegetables\, land\, agriculture\, hands\, labor\, planting\, people working the land\, history\, plantations\, enslavement\, roots\, inequity\, injustice\, low wages—all these elements intertwine within my artistic exploration.

DESCRIPTION:Joy Full: A Display of Wonder and Delight will feature artwork that invites viewers to experience moments of pure awe\, happiness\, and discovery. This exhibition is designed to engage audiences of all ages\, encouraging visitors to explore art together. We invite everyone to look closely at pieces that spark curiosity\, evoke nostalgia\, and bring a smile.\n\nThis exhibition will showcase an array of works from both established and emerging artists who explore the themes of happiness\, wonder\, and the simple delights of life through diverse mediums\, including painting\, sculpture\, installation and mixed media. Each piece has been carefully selected to evoke a sense of joy\, sparking curiosity and inspiring a sense of childlike wonder in all who experience it.\n\nJason Lanegan nostalgic assemblages put his collection of childhood toys and treasures on display\, memorializing them in beautiful handcrafted reliquaries like cabinets of curiosity. Viewers are invited to reminisce and engage in a personal narrative with his elegant oddities. John Connors’ and Becca Clason large-scale interactive installations will surprise and delight children of all ages with oversized pencils and towering flowers.\n\nOn the gallery walls\, viewers will find the humorous\, whimsical quilts of Rosanna Lynee Welter that are sure to make us giggle and the intricate shapes of Nicole Woodbury’s sculptures that cause one to pause in awe at the world around us. Visitors can also expect to see inspiring and exciting works by artists Marissa Albrecht\, Barbara Nelson\, Laura Erekson\, Cindy Clark\, Katie Kortman\, Bethanne Anderson\, Heather Olsen\, McKay Lenker\, Rosemarie Dunn\, Emily Hawkins\, and Leslie Graff.

SUMMARY:Portrait of a Pear Tree by Bryan Hutchison
DESCRIPTION:For as long as he can remember\, Hutchison’s family has grown\, harvested\, and preserved food each fall as part of their annual food supply. Last year\, his mother bottled approximately 140 quarts of grape juice\, 100 quarts of pears and peaches\, and dried about six bushels of pears\, five bushels of apples\, and three bushels of peaches\, along with other items such as jams\, hot sauce\, beans\, elderberry juice\, and asparagus. Hutchison grew up immersed in scriptural language\, often reading passages that use seeds\, fruit\, and growers as metaphors to make sermons relatable and meaningful. Inspired by one such passage\, this work features every pear harvested from a single pear tree.\n\nThe exhibit includes 637 printed photographs of pears arranged in a floor-to-ceiling grid. At the center of the space is a small table (approximately 30″x 30″ x 28″) holding a bowl of dried pears\, which viewers are encouraged to eat and which will be refilled throughout the exhibition. Each photograph\, approximately 7″ x 10″\, is unframed and typically hung with adhesive or pins\, though framing options are available if necessary. This installation invites viewers to engage with themes of sustenance\, memory\, and the interconnectedness of faith\, nature\, and daily life.\n\nARTIST STATEMENT\nAfter Lorentz: If I could write a love poem to mathematics\, this would be it. Specifically\, towards the math that gave weather patterns form: strange attractors\, slope fields\, chaos theory\, and topographics. Norton Lorenz is the mathematician who first wrote equations for convection rolls in clouds\, later formalized the math that describes “the butterfly effect”. ‘After Lorenz’ is a body of work exploring this relationship between measured\, observed natural phenomena (in the sky primarily) and the kind of visual form math elucidates: slope fields\, graphs\, polygons\, geometry\, and the like. I think of these works as a haiku (as it were) to the sky\, the earth\, and the world of simulacra made possible through mathematical abstraction.\n\nBIO\nBryan Hutchison is an artist that uses literature as a strong underpinning to his art exploration and practice. From biblical texts of seed parables to Spanish Golden Age Morality plays to family history for a local mine\, or post apocalyptic science fiction\, he uses texts as a context of comparison. His work explores the brevity and preciousness of mortality\, the human longing to belong to place\, and the urge to preserve what is inherently perishable. Bryan’s work spans various mediums: photography\, installation\, sculpture\, sound\, and video.\n\nBryan completed his undergraduate studies at BYU (2013)\, MFA at Pratt (2015). He currently resides in Provo\, Utah\, teaches as an adjunct professor at local universities\, and works part-time as a piano technician and rebuilder.

SUMMARY:Like A Bird by Chris Cutri
DESCRIPTION:Like a Bird captures the integrity and dedication farm workers exhibit while providing the U.S. with its ‘daily bread’. Beyond just chronicling the intense physical labor their skilled employment requires\, this documentary illuminates the profound insights and perspectives held by farm workers.\n\nBIO\nChris Cutri is a filmmaker and professor working in the mediums of documentary\, shorts\, and feature films. He received his MFA in Film Directing from the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena\, CA. Chris currently teaches in the School of Communications at Brigham Young University. His work has screened at festivals and conferences around the world. His recent work has focused on contemporary social issues. Chris is married to his wife Ramona\, who is also a professor\, and they have four children.\n\nARTIST STATEMENT\nThe ideas and issues I deal with in my work vary\, but typically I look at contemporary social issues or topics to inform my work. My work does not necessarily answer the questions or problems at hand\, but rather create a space for further reflection about the topic. I hope my work brings attention to narratives or questions that may be overlooked\, such as\, “How is my food harvested?” or “What happens to a child if their father or mother is deported?”\n\nAn observational approach is what I use when doing documentaries. This formal approach allows one to engage with the piece on their own terms. It also lets things unfold before me as the filmmaker. I approach the subject matter with some preconceived notions but always find something richer and more poetic with this approach. It’s the poetic sensibilities that I’m after.\nThough much of my work does not provide easy answers\, it is my desire that one is left with a sense of hope. Hope in humanity. Hope in goodness. Hope in the sublime.
