Nancy Steele-Makasci: Make No Bones About It

Photo: BDAC

“I was never meant to be an artist. I was born to poor Appalachian farmers who didn’t even graduate from high school. I spent my youth working in my father’s fields and sawmill. My unique hardships growing up poor in the dying agricultural landscape and culture of Appalachia has profoundly shaped my vision of my own country and world. I have been able to tap into a deep vein of suffering produced by being chronically poor, isolated, and disrespected. My work focuses on ideas that many of us struggle with in today’s world that is filled with insurmountable inequalities and injustices.” Read More

Marissa Albrecht: Restruction

“I readily yield to what others have given away or left behind, whether that be a piece of trash or a scene to photograph along my walking path. Curation emerges through seeing inherent patterns, colors, textures, and shapes, and thus elevating the formerly ordinary. Still recognizable, these recycled elements continue to live on in a new harmonious context and with a new visual purpose.”
